What it is: Vegemite is uniquely Australian and an Aussie icon. Almost every Australian home has a jar in their pantry. Vegemite is a nutritious product, one of the richest sources known of Vitamin B and most commonly used as a spread on bread or toast and it can also be used to improve the flavour of gravy, soups, and stews due to its salty taste. It is a thick dark brown, almost black, concentrated yeast extract.
What it smells like: Vegemite smells like chicken broth.
Tips: One of the most popular ways to eat Vegemite is to toast some bread, butter it (lots) and then spread on the Vegemite. But don’t go overboard. It is very salty and does have an acquired taste. You will either love it or hate it. If you have been raised eating it when you’re very young, you generally like it as an adult.
