What it is: The durian is a fruit that is long, thorny and can weigh up to 3 kilograms (7 pounds). It has a thick outer shell and is commonly called ‘the king of fruit’. It is said to be very delicious and is often treated as a delicacy which makes up for its awful smell. The taste has been described as similar to mango and rockmelon, while other people say it has a nutty flavor as well, similar to almonds.
What it smells like: The fruit has a sickly off smell which is comparable to rotten food, sewerage or off meat.
Tips: Although durian has over 30 species, only one of these is sold internationally. Other varieties are only sold locally, where they grow, in south east Asia. No matter whether you love it or hate it, you’re sure to feel strong emotions about this fruit.
