What it is: The lotus flower is a beautiful flower that grows in muddy water and rises to the surface, 8-12 inches above the water, with a gorgeous bloom. At night it closes and ‘hides’ underwater only to appear again at dawn. It symbolises the purity of heart and mind, and represents long life, health and luck.
It is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols and one of the most poignant representations of Buddhist teaching.
What it smells like: The lotus flower is heavily scented. It can be best described as having a rich, intoxicating quality that evokes the warm, misty atmosphere of tropical forests or gardens.
Tips: There are different colors to a Lotus Flower.
- White Lotus: represents spiritual perfection and total purity
- Pink Lotus: the supreme lotus, generally reserved for the highest deity, the Great Buddha himself.
- Red Lotus: signifies the original nature and purity of the heart
- Blue Lotus: symbol of wisdom of knowledge
